Homeowner Goals & Challenges

As a designer herself, the homeowner was excited to use her own bathroom as a space to explore new ideas and express her personal design style. The existing bathroom was traditional and fairly plain, with standard finishes that lacked character and visual interest. While the layout functioned well and didn’t require structural changes, the room felt dated and uninspired.

She envisioned transforming the space into a more distinctive, antique-inspired retreat with rich, moody colors and layered textures. Statement wallpaper, shiplap accents, updated tile, and new fixtures and cabinetry would bring in the old-world charm she was drawn to, creating a smaller bathroom with a much stronger sense of personality and atmosphere.

The project also gave her the freedom to test concepts she hadn’t yet been able to implement in client homes, making the remodel both creatively fulfilling and personally meaningful.

Our Remodeling Approach

The guest bathroom features Argan Brown tile extending about two-thirds up the walls behind the sink and toilet, creating a rich, grounded backdrop. Shiplap is used as an accent behind the sink and toilet and continues behind the ornate mirror, adding texture and visual interest. A border of ornamental square tile adds character and frames the shiplap accents, while the millwork above is painted in Swiss Coffee for a soft contrast.

The tub surround and front apron are finished in the same Argan Brown tile for a cohesive look, and the vanity is topped with marble to introduce a touch of elegance and refinement.

Remodel Challenge

One of the key challenges in the guest bathroom was the intersection of three different finish materials that met at the same plane. Originally, each material had a slightly different thickness, creating uneven transitions where they met. As both the homeowner and a designer, our client had a clear vision for these surfaces to appear perfectly flush for a clean, intentional look.

To achieve that level of precision, the team carefully modified the installation by shaving down the back sides of select materials. This allowed all three finishes to align seamlessly, creating a smooth, cohesive transition that elevated the overall craftsmanship and detail of the space.

The Final Outcome

The finished guest bathroom feels cohesive, refined, and full of character, with every surface transition executed with precision. By ensuring the materials met seamlessly, the space achieved the elevated, custom look our client envisioned, proving that thoughtful detailing can make a dramatic impact, even in a smaller room.
